Privacy notice

Nothing, by this site. There is no sign-up, no login, no comment box, no contact form and no subscription list, so no name, address or password is ever asked for or stored. Reading an article here does not create a record of you on this site.

The one exception in the whole system is any mail you choose to send to the address on how this works. That is your own message, held wherever that mailbox is held, and it is answered and then kept or deleted like any other correspondence.

One thing, and only if you ask for it. Pressing the sheet control at the top of the page writes your choice of day or night into your own browser's local storage, under the keywar1:theme-pref, so the site does not flash the wrong theme at you next time. It is a single word. It never leaves the device, it is not readable by this site's publisher, and clearing your browser data removes it.

No cookie is set by this site. If measurement is ever switched on, the sections below appear and describe what it stores before it stores anything.

A cookieless counter records that a page was viewed, roughly where in the world the request came from, and what kind of browser made it. It sets nothing on your device, builds no profile, and cannot recognise you on a second visit, so it does not ask for permission. It can still be switched off for this browser in the section below.

Google Analytics is loaded only after you allow it. It sets cookies in your browser, builds a per-visitor profile of what was read and in what order, and sends that to Google. Advertising signals and personalisation are switched off. Your answer is stored on this device, not in an account, and it can be withdrawn below.

Beyond page views it records outbound link clicks, how far down a page you scrolled, code blocks copied, and terms typed into the search box. A search term is text you wrote, so avoid typing anything into it you would not want recorded.

One answer stands for a fixed period and is then asked again, and a refusal lasts exactly as long as a consent. If your browser sends Global Privacy Control, that is read as a refusal and the question is never put to you.

One button, the same as it took to say yes. Switching to no also deletes the cookies the earlier yes created, and the page reloads afterwards, because a script that has already been fetched cannot be unloaded from a page that is still open.

This control covers the consent question only. The device switch further down is separate and stronger: it silences every counter, including the cookieless one.

The share buttons at the foot of an article add a short tag to the copied link saying which button produced it, such as utm_source=reddit. It identifies the channel, never the person, and it is the same tag for everyone who uses that button. Delete the part of the address after the question mark and the article opens identically.

The switch below silences every counter on this site in this browser, for good, whatever else is configured. It is per-browser rather than per-person, so it has to be set again in a different browser or after clearing site data. Adding?war1-analytics=off to any address on this site does the same thing, and ?war1-analytics=on undoes it.

What no switch on this page can reach is the counting that happens on the host's side of the connection: a web server records the requests it answers whether or not any script runs. That is the section below.

Whoever serves these files sees the ordinary details of every request: the address asked for, the time, the browser's user agent, and the IP address it came from. That is how any web server works, and it happens before a single line of this site's own code runs.

Here that server is Cloudflare. This site is a set of files with no application behind them, served from Cloudflare's edge network — the machine closest to you answers, wherever in the world that is, so there is no single country where your request lands. Cloudflare processes the request details above to deliver and cache the page and to block abuse. We do not receive them as a per-visitor log, and nothing in them is joined to anything else described on this page.

Since this site holds no personal data about a reader, there is normally nothing to request a copy of or to have deleted. If you have written to the site, that message is the exception and it can be deleted on request.

Privacy requests go to contact@plainwar.com, which is printed exactly as it is stored and is not yet a real mailbox. It is recorded as brand.email in site.config.ts and is the site owner's to create; no mailbox can exist before the domain does. This page will state a reply time when there is an address that can meet one.
